Gout is a painful disease of metabolic arthritis. The critical disease is caused when there is a chronic high level of urate in the blood. Patients who are suffering with the problem of gout may think that they are the only ones cursed with the painful disease. But the truth is that gout is the most frequently recorded disease in the medical history. The problem of gout has several stages of critical conditions. There are three main stages of gout and they are the acute gouty arthritis, inter-critical gout phase and the chronic tophaceous gout.
Many of you have heard about the disease of gout but very few of you may be aware of the gout stages. Knowing these in brief is important because the simple awareness can save you and your dear ones from the upcoming danger. The first attack of the gout is known as the acute gouty arthritis. The period between the recurrent gout attacks are termed as the inter-critical gout phase and the unrelenting acute pain condition of the gout is known as the chronic tophaceous gout. The consistent and unrelenting gout problem for years leads to the chronic tophaceous gout. This stage of gout is characterized by persistent, low-degree pain and inflammation. The pain or the inflammation can be mild or acute. At this stage of the gout the disease is almost ready to spread into the other parts of the joints. But there have been rare cases where the large joints like the spine, hips or shoulders are affected.
At
this critical stage of gout, there can be the formation of the mass of crystallized monosodium urate and these can build up in the joints, cartilages and bones which are known as the tophi. These can burst through the skin and can cause the appearance of the whitish or yellowish crumbly lumps. Tophi can be formed in the areas like hands, outer side of the ears, feet, elbow, knees and forearms. The tophi are painless normally but they can cause skin stiffness and pain of the joints. In time they can even damage the affected joint areas. Not only this, they can grow in larger size and can deform that affected body parts.
If the gout is not properly treated in the earlier stages then the chance of chronic tophaceous gout and the buildup of the tophi enhance with time. This can take almost a decade after the first manifestation of the gout attack. If the patient is treated properly after the first attack of gout the patient may not develop to the third stage of the painful disease. Maintaining the proper medications, exercising and the proper diet are the most important matters. Older women are more likely to develop the tohpi even in the early stages of the gout. People who are taking the medicine Cyclosporine are also likely to suffer the development of tophi.
So, the last or the final stage of the gout or the chronic tophaceous gout is really a critical condition which can damage the affected joints and even the kidneys irreversibly. However, the final stage can be prevented by maintaining the proper care and medication and the recommended food diet.
